Description
Gears of War: E-Day drops you right into the chaos of the first Locust attack, and it feels like the series finally giving us the brutal origin story we’ve been waiting for. I went in expecting a lot of the same cover shooting we’ve seen for years, but there’s something raw about seeing how everything started that makes the familiar gameplay hit different. It’s like getting the backstory to a band you’ve loved forever and realizing the early days were even messier than you imagined.
Review
The shooting feels weighty and satisfying in that classic Gears way, with the cover system still being the star of the show. What surprised me though is how much more aggressive the Locust feel compared to later games, which forces you to actually think about positioning instead of just camping behind the same piece of cover the whole fight. The new executions are brutal and over the top, but some of the weapon balance feels off, especially early on when you’re stuck with the starting Lancer that takes forever to down enemies at range. Everything looks appropriately grim and muddy, which fits the tone perfectly, though some of the character models still have that slightly stiff quality from the older games. The sound design really sells the invasion though, with the constant rumble of underground movement and the sudden, horrible screeches when the Locust finally break through. The voice acting for the original squad feels authentic to the era too, even if some of the dialogue gets a little too on-the-nose about how this is all going to hell. If you’ve been a fan of the series since the beginning, this is worth playing just to see how it all started and experience some genuinely intense set pieces. Newer players might find the pacing a bit slow compared to modern shooters, but there’s something refreshing about how deliberate everything feels. It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel, just showing you why the wheel was worth building in the first place.
