Half-Life 2: Deathmatch

Description
Ever wanted to bean a friend with a flying toilet and call it a legit kill? Half-Life 2: Deathmatch is chaotic, scrappy, and still a blast when the physics start doing the talking. It is the kind of multiplayer where a clever grab with the gravity gun can embarrass a sniper in an instant.
Review
The hook is simple and timeless - guns are good, but the gravity gun is king. You are always scanning for props to yeet across a room, from radiators and saw blades to, yes, toilets. HL2’s arsenal still slaps, with the crossbow’s satisfying stick, the AR2’s devastating energy ball, and the shotgun for tight corners. Movement has that classic Source feel with air strafing and light bunnyhopping, which creates a fun skill gap. The flip side is balance can feel all over the place depending on the map and server rules. Prop spam can be brutal, the energy ball is a salty one-hit, and veterans who chain bhops will run laps around casuals. Visually it is very 2004, but the Source engine holds up better than you might expect. Clean readability, chunky ragdolls, and those crunchy physics clashes give every fight a slapstick edge. City 17 flavored maps like dm_lockdown and dm_overwatch are tight, vertical, and full of moveable junk that turns every corridor into a trap. The audio is pure HL2 comfort food - metallic clangs, the zip of a crossbow bolt, the ominous thrum of an AR2 orb, and Combine barks cutting through the chaos. Performance is smooth on almost any modern PC, but physics over the network can be janky - prop hits sometimes feel inconsistent at higher ping. This is a guilty pleasure arena for quick, dumb fun, old-school server browser nights, or a LAN where the laughs matter more than KD. There is no progression grind, no cosmetics, no modern matchmaking, and the player base is small, so expect to poke around for active servers or spin up a private one for friends. If you love physics shenanigans, classic Source gunplay, and the idea of winning a duel with office furniture, HL2: Deathmatch is still worth a weekend. If you want ranked playlists and a healthy population at all hours, look elsewhere.
