Description
The Forest drops you into paradise with teeth. One minute you are chopping trees and cooking rabbit, the next you are whispering please do not see me while a patrol of cannibals circles your half-built fort. It is the kind of game that turns quiet evenings into oh no moments fast.
Review
The survival loop hits hard from the jump. You are always juggling hunger, thirst, stamina, and the very real possibility of getting clubbed in the dark. Building is tactile and satisfying - slap down a ghost blueprint, haul logs with a sled, rig up deadfall traps, and watch your little shack become a bunker. The AI is the secret sauce. Cannibals scout you, test your defenses, and back off only to return with friends. There is real give and take between stealth, intimidation tricks like effigies or red paint, and straight up scrapping with a crafted spear or a found katana or chainsaw. Combat is a bit clunky and hit detection can be inconsistent, especially in tight spaces, but the tension it creates is undeniable. Solo is nerve wracking, co-op turns it into a chaotic campfire story maker. The vibe is the star. Daytime is almost cozy - sun filtering through pines, waves tapping the shore, deer bounding past your berry bush. Then night falls and the forest talks back. You hear distant laughter, branches snap, and something breathes just outside the firelight. Caves are a whole other level of nope, with lighters sputtering, echoes doing work, and body horror mutants lurking in pitch black. Visually it still holds up with dense foliage, creepy cave dressing, and moody lighting, though you will see the occasional jank in animations or pathing. Performance is generally solid on modern hardware, but expect the odd physics goof or enemy getting stuck on geometry, which is more funny than fatal. If you are into survival crafting but want actual menace rather than a chill sandbox, this is a must play. It rewards patience, scouting, and a bit of roleplay, and the breadcrumb story gives you a creepy destination without handholding. If you hate resource grinding or jump scares, or you want crisp combat above all else, it might wear you down. Grab a couple friends, set up a lakeside base, and prepare for the moment the forest starts watching you back.
