Ace Combat 8 Preview: Sky-High Immersion and a Bold Multiplayer Bet

During a recent hands-on session, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve delivered a visceral flight experience that left a lasting impression. The game's cloud technology is a standout, creating moments of genuine tension as you plunge through dense formations with zero visibility, never sure what awaits on the other side.

The preview showcased the campaign's opening missions, which double as an extended tutorial. Producer Manabu Shimomoto explained that this approach aims to make this the most accessible entry yet. The first-person cockpit view adds to the immersion, with detailed instruments and the sensation of every bank and dive. One mission involved a mix of aerial dogfighting and naval strikes, where the writer found themselves physically leaning into maneuvers—a testament to the game's intense feedback loop.

Beyond the single-player, Ace Combat 8 is pushing multiplayer in new directions. A 100-player free-for-all mode lets players rise from lowly mercenaries to aces, while cooperative missions allow squadrons to tackle objectives together, filling a gap left by the previous game. However, the introduction of a battle pass and seasonal content raises eyebrows. While regular updates are welcome, the live-service model is notoriously risky, especially given recent industry layoffs tied to underperforming service games.

Brand director Kazutoki Kono acknowledged the series' rocky past, noting that it was only by doubling down on core fans that the franchise was revived. Now, with this ambitious sequel, the team hopes to capture an even wider audience. The question is whether the live-service elements will support that growth or become a burden.

What's your take on Ace Combat 8's multiplayer ambitions? Will you be diving into the 100-player dogfights, or are you wary of another battle pass? Share your thoughts below.

The dynamic clouds look slick, but paying full box price just to get slapped with a battle pass and seasonal grinds hurts my wallet already. If they want a 100-player mode to actually survive, the multiplayer side should probably just be free-to-play. Otherwise, those lobbies will empty out fast and I'll just wait for the inevitable deep discount on the campaign down the road.
