Arc Raiders PvE Mode Still Undecided After Test, Devs Weigh Options
Embark Studios recently wrapped up a dedicated PvE matchmaking test for Arc Raiders, giving players a chance to enjoy the game without the threat of other human opponents. While the community response was largely positive, the studio remains tight-lipped about whether this mode will become a permanent fixture.
What the developers are saying
Executive producer Aleksander Grøndal told MP1st that the team is still poring over the data and weighing several factors before making a decision. He acknowledged a historical skepticism toward PvE—Arc Raiders originally began as a purely cooperative shooter before Embark pivoted to the PvPvE extraction formula during development.
Since launch, two distinct player groups have emerged: those who thrive on the high-stakes tension of PvP encounters, and those who simply want to explore the game's deep PvE mechanics in a stress-free environment. Grøndal noted that the test might be a signal that Arc Raiders can accommodate more playstyles, but the challenge is doing so without diluting the core experience.
Finding the right purpose
According to Grøndal, the key question is understanding what players truly want from a PvE mode. Is it meant to be a relaxing side activity between intense PvPvE rounds? A hardcore challenge to test skills against AI? Or a fully fleshed-out standalone experience? Each direction would have different implications for future updates, so Embark is taking a cautious approach.
The studio has previously hinted that offering two distinct modes for different audiences is a possible path forward, but no concrete plans have been announced. In the meantime, the recent Frozen Trail update has reinvigorated the player base, pushing concurrent numbers to heights not seen in six months.
Why this matters for players
The uncertainty leaves the community in limbo. Many players have been vocal about wanting a permanent PvE option, and the positive test results have only raised expectations. Embark's careful deliberation shows they respect both the game's identity and the diverse needs of their audience, but the wait for a final answer could be frustrating for those hoping for a clear roadmap.

Having a proper PvE option would actually make grinding for loot feel worth the time instead of just donating my entire kit to someone camping the extraction. Extraction shooters are fun until your hourly return on fun hits zero. If they make PvE permanent, that basically doubles the value of the game for me, as long as the progression and rewards don't get completely gutted in the process.
