Description

I gotta say, jumping into Castlevania: Belmont's Curse feels like catching up with an old friend you haven't seen in years. Twenty-three years after Dracula's Curse, you're stepping into Rose Belmont's boots, and honestly, the premise alone got me hooked - a fresh Belmont with new stakes in that same gothic world we all love. The "Crimson Curse" angle adds this layer of personal drama that makes it more than just another vampire hunt.

Review

The gameplay hits that sweet spot between classic Castlevania combat and modern Metroidvania exploration that feels really satisfying once you get into it. Rose's moveset starts basic but opens up as you progress, with whip combos and sub-weapons that actually feel useful instead of just there for show. The RPG elements add some nice depth with skill trees and equipment choices, though I found the inventory management could get clunky during longer sessions. Combat feels weighty and responsive, but some of the platforming sections can be punishing if you're not patient with the timing. The pixel art style nails that retro-modern balance that makes everything pop without feeling like it's trying too hard. The gothic environments are detailed enough to make each area feel distinct, from crumbling castles to misty graveyards, and the lighting effects really sell the atmosphere. Sound design is solid - the music captures that classic Castlevania mood while the sound effects give combat that satisfying impact. Voice acting is minimal but well done where it exists, though I found myself turning it off after a while to focus on the score. If you're into 2D action games with exploration and a good story hook, this is worth checking out, especially if you've played the older Castlevania titles. It's not revolutionary, but it respects the source material while adding enough new elements to feel fresh. Rose's journey has some genuinely emotional beats that caught me off guard, and the combat loop is addictive enough to keep you pushing through the tougher sections.
