NBA 2K20

EDITOR'S RATING

6.0/10

Release Date: September 6, 2026

Description

NBA 2K20 is a snapshot of the series at its best and worst - slick hoops IQ, deep modes, and a grind that tests your patience. With the multiplayer servers shut down, what remains is a surprisingly meaty offline basketball sim if you know where to look.

Review

On the court, 2K20 still feels great. Dribbling has real weight, size-ups flow into blow-bys if you set them up, and timing your jumper to hit greens is as satisfying as ever. Badges and the pie chart builder let you sculpt a role that actually plays differently, though the meta was notorious for hop steps and interior bullying. Defense can feel coin-flippy with bump steals and sticky contact animations, but with sliders and difficulty tweaks you can tune it into a tight sim. The big caveat today is that online is gone - no Neighborhood, Pro-Am, Rec, or MyTeam economy - so your fun is in Play Now, MyLeague, and an offline MyCareer that still tells a decent story but loses the social grind. Presentation holds up. Player scans for stars look sharp, animations chain smoothly, and the broadcast package nails TV energy with replays, wipes, and a ton of commentary lines, even if they repeat after a few seasons. Arenas have the right vibe, crowds swell at the right moments, and the soundtrack keeps menus lively without getting in the way. It is not perfect - canned contact in the paint shows its age, some role players look generic, and last-gen load times can drag - but once you are on the hardwood the 60 fps flow is clean on PS4 and Xbox One, and it is perfectly playable on PC and Switch with obvious visual concessions on the latter. If you live for franchise tinkering, this is still a playground. MyLeague is absurdly flexible with sliders, draft classes, and custom rosters, and classic teams make for great couch rivalries. MyGM 2.0’s action points system is fussy and gets in the way, and with servers shut you should skip entirely if you wanted MyTeam or competitive online. For cheap offline hoops, though, NBA 2K20 remains a smart, physical sim you can sink a season or five into, especially with community rosters. Everyone else should look to a newer entry that still has live support.
