Sons Of The Forest drops you on a gorgeous nightmare of an island and lets you figure it out the hard way. It is equal parts chill log-cabin fantasy and pants-wetting cave horror, and it shines when those two vibes collide.

Review

The core loop is classic survival, but it is the little twists that make it tick. Chopping trees and free-form log building feel great, especially once you realize you can shape ramps, roofs, and defensive walls without being locked to rigid blueprints. Kelvin, the mute, oddly lovable helper, will haul logs or fish while you focus on building or exploring, and Virginia becomes a game-changer once she trusts you enough to carry guns. Enemy AI is surprisingly reactive, with cannibals scouting, probing your defenses, and returning in larger raids. Combat works but can feel clunky, and the story breadcrumbs are still thin, so the midgame can drift into busywork if you do not set your own goals. Co-op is where it sings, turning every supply run into a goofy, tense expedition. Visually, the island is stunning. Dense forests sway in the wind, winter snows mute the world and ramp up the hunger pressure, and nights are properly black and terrifying. Caves are the star of the horror show, with gross, rubbery mutants and excellent sound design that lets distant shrieks and dripping water ratchet up the dread. The diegetic inventory mat and GPS tracker are tactile touches that sell the fantasy. Performance can dip once your base gets big or during storms, and object placement can be finicky, but the atmosphere is strong enough to carry through most rough edges. If you love survival sandboxes that let you tell your own stories, this is easy to recommend, especially with friends. If you need a tight narrative or perfectly tuned melee, you may bounce off the repetition and jank. For everyone else, Sons Of The Forest is a messy, memorable adventure worth getting lost in.
