Description
Man, Ori and the Will of the Wisps hooks you fast with its mix of tight platforming and a story that actually gets to you. You play as this little glowing spirit running around a huge world full of secrets, and it feels like a big step up from the first game in scope. If you like games where exploration pays off with new powers, this one delivers.
Review
The gameplay shines with fluid movement and a bunch of abilities you unlock that make backtracking fun instead of a chore. Combat feels weighty with your different attacks and spirit powers, but some of the later platforming sections and boss fights can get pretty punishing if your timing is off. It never feels unfair for long though, since checkpoints are usually fair and you can tweak the difficulty a bit. The art direction is straight up gorgeous with hand painted backgrounds that shift from lush forests to eerie swamps, and the lighting effects make everything pop during night sections. Sound design is top notch too, with a sweeping orchestral score that matches the mood perfectly and subtle audio cues that help during tricky jumps. The whole atmosphere pulls you in so much that you end up wandering just to soak it all up instead of rushing the main path. If you enjoy Metroidvania style games with heart and don't mind a challenge, this is worth your time for the way it blends story and gameplay so well. It's especially good for players who liked Hollow Knight or the first Ori and want something with more polish and emotional payoff. Casual folks might hit a wall on some sections but the overall package is memorable.
