Description
Planet Zoo 2 is basically what happens when you take the original and go, "yeah, but what if we could actually swim with the dolphins and watch eagles soar overhead?" The new aquatic and flying animals completely change how you think about zoo design, and the Wildlife Reserves mode feels like a natural next step instead of some tacked-on afterthought.
Review
The core loop of building habitats and managing animals is still as satisfying as ever, but the new species force you to completely rethink your layouts. Aquatic animals need these massive tank systems with viewing tunnels and underwater observation points, while flying species require massive aviaries with different height levels. The pathfinding AI is still occasionally dumb - you'll watch guests walk in circles instead of using a perfectly good path you built three meters away. The new breeding mechanics are actually pretty deep though, letting you track genetics across multiple generations, which adds a nice layer of long-term planning that wasn't there before. The graphics have that same cozy, detailed look that made the first game so appealing, but the water effects and flying animations really sell the expanded scope. Sound design is solid too, with distinct calls from all the new species and some genuinely nice ambient tracks that shift depending on which continent your zoo is in. The atmosphere works best during golden hour when the lighting hits the water just right and you can see penguins diving while flamingos wade in the shallows. This is definitely a game for people who already liked the first one and want more depth, or anyone who's into management sims with a creative bent. If you bounced off the original because it felt too limited in scope, the new animal types and release mechanics might be enough to win you over. Just know that you're signing up for some serious time investment if you want to do everything properly.
