Description
War Thunder is that game you boot up for a quick tank skirmish and suddenly it is 2 a.m. because you needed one more sortie. It throws planes, tanks, and ships from WW2 to modern kit into big messy battles where every hit feels earned. It is free, but it will absolutely charge you in time and patience.
Review
The hook is the feel of the combat. Tank shells have weight, you angle armor on instinct, and a well placed shot that pops a rack or knocks out a driver is chef’s kiss. Aircraft handle great with mouse aim in Arcade, then get punishingly honest in Realistic and Sim, where energy management and situational awareness decide everything. Naval is the odd one out - cool ships and gorgeous water, but the matches can turn into long range chip damage. Progression is a real grind. Stock vehicles are miserable until you unlock key modules, uptiers can be brutal, and Battle Rating compression occasionally throws you to the wolves. When a plan comes together though, especially with a squad covering caps and calling targets, it hits that rare blend of sim-adjacent depth and instant chaos. It looks and sounds fantastic. Vehicles are modeled down to rivets and optics, damage states tell a story with charred plates, blown tracks, and smoking engines. Lighting and weather sell the mood, from sun glare blinding your sight to clouds swallowing a jet you are chasing. Explosions pop, tracers crackle, and you can tell the difference between a Merlin, a radial, and a turbine by ear. Maps are a mixed bag - lots of variety, but some are too small for top tier speeds, which turns fights into spawn-to-spawn slugfests. Performance scales well on PC and console, though the client churns a bit when it loads assets the first time. The hangar UI is deep but cluttered, and the sound mix can be a touch loud by default, so tweak it. Final thoughts - if you love military hardware, methodical combat, and learning by getting wrecked until it clicks, this is your playground. It is incredible as a free package, but the economy pushes you toward premium time or a starter pack unless you are very patient. Solo queue is fine, but with two or three friends on voice it goes from good to great. If you want instant unlocks and arcade-only mayhem, you might bounce off the grind and the learning curve. If you are cool with earning your wins and living for that perfect side shot or last second dogfight reversal, War Thunder will keep you busy for years.
