Enshrouded Early Access Review: A Survival Game That Finally Gets Combat Right

Enshrouded drops players into a corrupted fantasy world where the very air is toxic and survival demands more than just punching trees. At its core, this is a survival action RPG that loops you through gathering, crafting, building, and fighting, but the Shroud—a creeping, deadly fog—infuses every expedition with genuine tension. The result is a game that feels like the genre’s next step forward, even in early access.

What Works

The combat immediately stands out. Melee attacks have a responsive weight, and magic spells aren't an afterthought—they integrate naturally into encounters. Exploration benefits from a handcrafted world that encourages curiosity, and the terraforming building tools let you reshape the landscape with impressive freedom. Co-op is seamless, making it easy to drop into a friend's game without the usual technical hurdles.

The atmosphere is another triumph. The Shroud fog creates a palpable sense of dread, especially at night, and the sound design amplifies it with unsettling ambient noises in corrupted zones. It’s a survival game where you’ll actually feel nervous about venturing too far from safety, and that’s a rare achievement.

Where It Stumbles

The stamina system can frustrate during traversal, making long runs across the map feel sluggish. Resource management also becomes a chore; you’ll often find yourself trudging back for basic materials, which disrupts the otherwise engaging flow. Graphically, the world looks decent but won’t compete with big-budget titles, and the soundtrack is forgettable—though it wisely lets the environmental audio do the heavy lifting.

Early access roughness shows in some missing features and unpolished edges, but the core loop is already strong enough to overlook them. Solo players will still find plenty to love, though the building and exploration really shine in a group.

If you’ve been burned by survival games that skimp on combat or story, Enshrouded is worth a look. It sits comfortably alongside other indie darlings like Graveyard Keeper 2, offering a darker, more combat-focused alternative. The foundation here is rock solid, and with time, it could become the genre’s new benchmark.

Expected score: 8/10

Combat actually feeling good in a survival game sounds like a miracle, but the real test is the grind-to-fun ratio. If I'm spending half my session hauling basic rocks and waiting on stamina to refill, I might wait for a decent sale before jumping in. For those playing solo, does the content right now justify diving in early, or should I let it bake on the wishlist a bit longer?
