Is Darktide's Merciless AI Director a Flaw or a Feature?

Even years after launch, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has a director that seems to hold a grudge. You’re holding a corridor perfectly—chainsword singing, lasgun fire stitching the dark—and then the game decides you need two mutants, a trapper, and a flamer all at once while a horde crashes in. It’s not an occasional spike; it’s the rule. Some call it unbalanced. I’d argue it’s the entire point.

Darktide’s melee is chunky, satisfying, and built for crowd control, but ranged weapons often feel anemic unless you’ve dedicated your whole build to them. That asymmetry forces a constant dance: you rely on teammates to cover what you can’t. When the director layers three disablers on top of a beast of Nurgle, it’s not a gentle suggestion to cooperate—it’s a hard check. Random groups crumble under that pressure, and the class system can lock you into roles that don’t mesh. Yet those same moments create the most memorable clutches, the kind where you’re reviving a downed Ogryn while dodging fire and screaming into voice chat.

Unlike the more predictable encounter cadence of something like Halo Infinite, Darktide thrives on unpredictability. The question is whether that unpredictability feels like a deliberate design choice or a tuning oversight. After all this time, I lean toward the former—but I totally get why it drives people away.

So what’s your take? Do you love the chaos, or do you wish Fatshark would dial back the special spawns? Have you found loadouts or team comps that turn the director’s worst into a manageable puzzle? Or does that frustration keep you from recommending the game, even now?
