Manager Live Challenges in EA SPORTS FC 26: Fresh Tactics vs. Scripted Frustration

A year in, EA SPORTS FC 26's Manager Live Challenges are the mode that keeps pulling me back. The themed twists force you to rethink lineups and tactics, breaking the monotony of standard league play. But here's the rub: the AI occasionally slips into that old "scripted" feeling, where a last-minute equalizer feels less like a tactical failure and more like the game deciding it's your turn to concede.

The Tactical Shake-Up

These challenges really shine when they push you to build around specific constraints—like an all-icon squad or a formation you'd never touch otherwise. It's not just gimmicky; it forces you to engage with the game's deeper mechanics, from player roles to custom tactics. The 48-team tournament structure also means every match carries weight, so you can't just spam through balls and hope for the best.

But that AI... in tight spots, it can feel like the difficulty spikes aren't about smarter play, but about your defenders suddenly turning into traffic cones. It's a shame, because when the system works, the back-and-forth is electric. Still, I'd argue it's a net positive—the mode offers a satisfying loop that beats the yearly roster updates of old.

What's your experience? Have you found ways to outsmart the AI's "scripted" moments, or do you just accept them as part of the challenge? And which live challenge rule set has been your favorite so far? Let's hear it.
