GTA 6 PS4 and Xbox One: Rockstar Confirms Last-Gen Is Officially Out

The Confirmed Facts: No PS4 or Xbox One Version

Lets cut straight to it: Grand Theft Auto VI is not coming to PS4 or Xbox One. Rockstar Games and publisher Take-Two Interactive have been unequivocal about this since the release date announcement. The game launches November 19, 2026, exclusively on PlayStation 5 (including PS5 Pro) and Xbox Series X|S. The official GTA 6 price & editions page lists no last-gen SKUs, and the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store only offer the current-gen versions. If youre still clinging to a base PS4 from 2013, youre officially out of luck.

This isnt a last-minute rug pull either. Rockstar first confirmed the game was "well underway" in February 2022, well into the current-gen lifecycle. The subsequent delaysfrom a Fall 2025 window, to May 2026, and finally to November 19, 2026never included any mention of backporting. In fact, the November 2025 delay statement doubled down on polish: "We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve." That kind of ambition simply doesnt scale down to decade-old laptop-class Jaguar CPUs and 5400 RPM hard drives.

What Rockstar Has Said About the Move

Rockstar hasnt issued a grand manifesto on abandoning last-gen. Theyve just silently moved on, which is the most Rockstar thing possible. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, however, has explicitly addressed the platform strategy in the context of the missing PC versionmore on that in our FAQnoting that Rockstar historically leads on console. The implication is clear: the studio picks platforms based on what the game demands, not on install-base nostalgia. Given the dynamic weather system with storms and hurricanes, the NPC memory and reaction behaviors, and the seamless dual-protagonist switching shown in the Extended Look, targeting the PS4s 1.8 TFLOPS GPU would be like trying to run Cyberpunk 2077 on a smart fridge.

Take-Twos June 2026 press release for pre-orders and editions reinforces the current-gen focus: the Standard Edition at $79.99 and Ultimate Edition at $99.99 are listed only for PS5 and Xbox Series. Even the physical "edition" is just a download code in a boxno disc. Rockstar is so far past optical media that theyre not even pretending to target hardware that still uses it as a primary distribution method.

Why Current-Gen-Only Is the New Standard

This shouldnt be surprising. Were six years into the PS5 and Xbox Series generation. While Rockstar hasn't shared exact hardware sales targets, industry analysts widely consider the current-gen install base large enough to support a blockbuster launch, and a game of this scalewith reported development costs in the billion-dollar range, based on analyst estimates that remain unconfirmedis built to move consoles. Rockstar isnt gambling on a user base: they know people will buy new hardware for this game.

From a PC performance nerds perspective, this is actually encouraging. When a developer targets only modern architecturesZen 2 CPUs, NVMe SSDs, hardware-accelerated ray tracingwe tend to get fewer of those horrible "min spec" compromises that plague cross-gen titles. No more pop-in textures on the highway because the engine is choking on a 2013 memory budget. Rockstar built GTA 6 for SSDs and CPUs that can handle the dense pedestrian AI and world simulation theyve shown off. Thats a good thing for eventual PC performance, even if were still waiting on an official GTA 6 release date for our platform.

What About PC? And Whats Still Unknown

While last-gen is dead and buried, the PC situation remains a classic Rockstar waiting game. There is no announced PC version. Period. An October 2026 GamesBeat report claims a Q1 2027 PC release, but thats a rumornot confirmed, no official system requirements, nothing. And no, theres no magical secret PS4 port hiding in a Take-Two earnings report. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling you a bridge in Port Gellhorn.

The unknowns are plentiful: we dont know if a potential PC version will support Steam Deck out of the gate, whether itll use DirectStorage for the NVMe requirement, or what kind of upscaling tech (DLSS? FSR? XeSS?) it might ship with. All we have is Rockstars history of a delayed PC launch and Zelnicks comment that its not due to a Sony deal. For now, keep an eye on our GTA 6 leaks & rumors page, and dont mistake wishful thinking for a press release.

Honestly, it feels like the PS2 to PS3 jump all over again. Remember how mind-blowing it was when GTA IV came out and clearly couldn't run on older hardware? Expecting a machine from 2013 to handle a modern open world with full physics and dense crowds was always wishful thinking. Sometimes you just have to let the old machines rest.

Resting is fine, but my wallet is definitely sweating. A lot of folks kept their base consoles specifically because current-gen hardware is still a huge investment, and now they have to buy an entire box just for one title. Hopefully hardware bundles start getting discounted closer to launch, because entering current-gen just to cruise around is a steep toll.

I get the expense, but keeping last-gen would have crippled the game's engine. Old laptop-tier CPUs and mechanical hard drives choke hard on asset streaming, which completely ruins high-speed traversal and responsive physics. If we want snappy vehicle handling, seamless building interiors, and uncompromised simulation without invisible walls and loading stutters, cutting the cord was completely necessary.

Totally agree on the world simulation aspect. Leaving the old hardware behind means the environment can truly breathe. I am so ready to see the volumetric fog rolling over the wetlands, the ambient wildlife routines, and the neon reflections across rainy coastal streets without heavy compromises. It stings for older console owners, but the artistic payoff should be gorgeous.
