Preparing Your PS5 and Xbox Series X|S Storage for GTA 6

Let’s get the obvious out of the way: Rockstar hasn’t whispered a single megabyte about the final install size for GTA 6. But if you’ve been around since the days of swapping discs on a PS2, you know this thing will eat your SSD like a gator in a Leonida drainage canal. Pre-loads kick off November 12, 2026—a week before the November 19 launch—so you’ve got a few weeks to tidy up. No need to panic-buy an overpriced expansion card just yet. Here’s how to make room without nuking your entire library.

Step 1: See What You’re Working With

First, check your console’s free space. On PS5, head to Settings > Storage. On Xbox Series X|S, hit the Xbox button, go to Profile & system > Settings > System > Storage devices. Write down that number. If it’s under 200 GB, you’re probably in trouble. If it’s under 100 GB, you’re definitely in trouble. Rockstar’s last open-world monster, Red Dead Redemption 2, clocked in around 150 GB after updates. GTA 6 will almost certainly be larger—analysts toss around numbers, but nothing’s official. Plan for at least 150–200 GB of breathing room, plus extra for the day-one patch that will inevitably drop while you’re trying to play.

Step 2: The Great Purge

You don’t need that battle royale you haven’t touched in six months. Be ruthless. On either console, sort your game list by size and pick off the fattest targets first. Don’t forget:

  • Games with “free” weekend trials you installed and forgot.
  • That 100+ GB shooter that’s been sitting there “just in case” the squad gets back together.
  • Single-player epics you’ve already finished and won’t replay before November.

Remember, deleting a game doesn’t delete your save data—those live in the cloud or a separate partition. You can always redownload later. Your console’s SSD will thank you.

Step 3: Archive to External Drives (The Slow-but-Cheap Trick)

If you’ve got a USB 3.0 external hard drive gathering dust, now’s its moment. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S let you move games to external storage to free up internal space. The catch? On PS5, you can’t play PS5 games from an external drive—only store them. Xbox Series X|S is the same for optimized titles. But for cold storage, it’s perfect. Move those 80 GB RPGs to the external drive, and when GTA 6 arrives, you’ll have a clean slate. Transfer speeds are slow, so do this overnight while you sleep. Or while you’re watching the Launch Trailer for the tenth time.

Step 4: Kill the Screenshot Hoard

I know, you’ve got 4K HDR captures of sunsets in other games. But your console’s media gallery is a silent space hog. On PS5, go to Media Gallery and sort by size. Delete 30-second clips of random explosions you’ll never watch. On Xbox, the Captures app has a “manage” option. You can back them up to the cloud or a USB stick first if you’re sentimental. Every gigabyte counts when you’re staring down a pre-load progress bar.

Step 5: Clear System Cache and Leftovers

This one’s more of a housekeeping ritual than a space-saver, but it can’t hurt. On PS5, boot into Safe Mode (hold power button until second beep) and select Clear Cache and Rebuild Database—don’t worry, it won’t delete your games. On Xbox, a full shutdown (hold power button for 10 seconds) and unplug for a minute clears persistent cache. It might free up a few GB of temporary files. Every little bit helps.

Step 6: Consider the Expansion Route (If You Must)

If you’ve done all the above and still can’t stomach deleting anything, expansion storage is your last resort. For PS5, you need a PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD with a heatsink—prices have dropped, but a decent 1 TB drive still runs $80–$100. For Xbox Series X|S, the Seagate or WD expansion cards are pricier per gigabyte. Don’t overpay for a “GTA 6 bundle” marketing gimmick. A standard, reputable drive works fine. Just make sure to install it before November 12 so you’re not fumbling with a screwdriver while your friends are already playing.

Bottom line: start cleaning now. Rockstar’s silence on the install size doesn’t mean it’ll be small—it means you should prepare for the worst. Clear out the bloat, archive the backlog, and maybe finally uninstall that game you only played because it was on Game Pass or PS Plus. Your SSD will be ready, and you’ll be in Vice City while others are still staring at a “not enough free space” error.

Remember when Vice City fit entirely on a single PS2 disc and you just popped it in without a single install screen? The modern storage shuffle is wild. Purging half an SSD just to wander around digital Florida feels surreal, but that seems to be the tax on modern detail compared to managing little eight-megabyte memory cards.

Those old memory cards were so simple, but I do appreciate how much atmospheric detail modern storage gives us. Thinking about the swamp audio, wind through the palms, and sunrise lighting makes the digital cleanup feel a little easier. Still hurts my heart to delete a handful of lovely indie games to clear space for one massive giant, though.
