Is $79.99 the New Normal? Discussing GTA 6's Base Price Tag

Look, I’m coming at this from a speedrunner’s perspective—I care about movement tech, mission scripting, and how quickly I can break the game. So when Take-Two slapped a $79.99 base price on the Standard Edition for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, my first thought was: does the single-player campaign earn that tag? Rockstar’s press release describes GTA VI as a single-player experience at launch, and whether a new GTA Online launches alongside it remains unconfirmed (a 2027 multiplayer launch is only rumored). That means we’re paying for Jason and Lucia’s story, the heists, the dynamic weather, and all the side activities shown in the Extended Look.

From a mechanics standpoint, the dual-protagonist switching and the reported depth of NPC reactions could make for some wild speedrun categories. If the unconfirmed reports of an 80-hour playthrough are close to true, that’s a lot of content to route. But $80 is steep—$10 more than the last-gen standard. I’m curious how the community weighs that against the lack of confirmed day-one multiplayer.

So, what’s your take? Check our hub for more details, and jump into the discussion below:

  • Is $79.99 a fair ask for a single-player-focused launch, or does the unconfirmed multiplayer status give you pause?
  • Are you planning to pre-order, wait for reviews, or hold out for the rumored PC release?
  • Does the Ultimate Edition’s $99.99 price tag tempt you with its exclusive vehicles and mod shops, or is the base game enough?

My wallet is crying just reading that. Bumping the baseline to eighty bucks for just the campaign feels rough, especially when every other publisher is going to treat this as an open invitation to follow suit. If there is no confirmed multiplayer out of the gate, I am definitely waiting for real launch reviews before opening my purse. Value per hour matters, and that entry fee stings.

I get the hesitation on the price tag, but honestly, if the world design is as rich as it looks, I might still bite. Just cruising coastal highways at sunset with the radio on or watching dynamic storms roll across the swamps sounds incredible. For me, a gorgeous, deeply detailed single-player world to get lost in is worth so much more than another chaotic multiplayer lobby anyway.

You make a fair point about the solo focus. Back in the day, classics like Vice City and San Andreas were purely single-player romps and we were completely satisfied without needing an endless online mode tacked on. Still, watching base game prices creep upward again makes me wince. The tech jump looks stunning, but I miss when buying a complete box didn't feel like a major financial decision.
