The Criminal Network of Leonida: How GTA 6's Side Characters Connect
There's something about the way Rockstar paints its worlds that makes me want to linger in every corner. With Grand Theft Auto VI, the sun-bleached state of Leonida already feels alive with personality, and a big part of that comes from the side characters we've met so far. I've been poring over every trailer, the extended gameplay showcase, and those official website descriptions, and a fascinating web of relationships is starting to emerge—one that hints at how the criminal underworld might pull Jason and Lucia deeper into its neon-lit embrace.
The Confirmed Web of Connections
Rockstar has officially introduced several key figures, each with a distinct place in Leonida's ecosystem. Cal Hampton is Jason's friend, a self-described homebody who spends his time snooping on Coast Guard communications—a detail that immediately sparks curiosity about maritime smuggling or heists. Then there's Boobie Ike, a Vice City legend whose business empire spans a strip club, real estate, and a recording studio. He's the money behind Only Raw Records, run by Dre'Quan Priest, who in turn has signed the rap duo Real Dimez (Bae-Luxe and Roxy, friends since high school with a massive social media following).
On the grittier side, Raul Bautista is a charismatic veteran bank robber openly looking for new talent—the kind of person who might see potential in a desperate couple. And Brian Heder is an older man who ran drugs during the golden age of smuggling in the Keys; actor Stephen Root has confirmed he plays a role (though he hasn't named the character), adding a layer of lived-in weariness to the cast. These connections are all explicit, pulled straight from Rockstar's own material.
How They Might Weave into Jason and Lucia's Journey
None of these characters exist in a vacuum, and it's easy to imagine how their paths could cross. Cal's Coast Guard intel might become crucial for missions through the Leonida Keys or the VC Port, perhaps feeding Jason information for a smuggling run that echoes Brian Heder's past. Boobie Ike's empire links the glitzy nightlife of Vice City to the music industry—I can already picture a mission where Jason and Lucia have to protect a Real Dimez concert from rival crews, or use the recording studio as a front. Raul Bautista's search for new talent feels like a direct invitation to the protagonists; after all, Lucia just got out of Leonida Penitentiary and Jason has a military background that didn't end well. They're exactly the kind of "new talent" a veteran bank robber might recruit.
What excites me most is the texture Rockstar seems to be layering in. The social-media culture is a big theme, and Real Dimez's online presence could turn a heist into a viral spectacle—or a liability. Brian Heder's drug-running days might not just be backstory; the Keys are a tropical island chain perfect for smuggling, and his knowledge could be a narrative key. But these are just educated guesses, woven from the threads Rockstar has given us. The official soundtrack, with its original track by Justice featuring Tame Impala, SZA, and King Gizzard, already sets a mood of hazy, sun-drenched tension that I hope these characters will inhabit.
What Rockstar Hasn't Told Us Yet
Despite these rich details, plenty remains in the shadows. We don't know if Cal, Boobie, Raul, and Brian are allies, antagonists, or something in between. Are they part of the "criminal conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida" that the official blurb teases? How do they intersect with each other? For instance, could Boobie's real estate holdings tie into Brian's old smuggling routes? Rockstar hasn't confirmed any direct links between these characters—only their individual descriptions. And while the extended gameplay showcase showed us dual-protagonist switching mid-mission, we've yet to see how these side characters fit into that dynamic. The full map of relationships is still a mystery, and that's exactly the kind of slow-burn reveal I love to see unfold in a world this detailed.

The web of contacts sounds wild, but honestly I'm just looking at Jason and Lucia's dynamic. With all these eccentric bosses like Boobie Ike and Raul handing out jobs, I really hope the mission structures let you tackle heists flexibly together rather than forcing rigid scripted paths. Playing a modern Bonnie and Clyde vibe would be so much fun if the game leans into chaotic teamwork.
Flexible heists would be massive for routing. My main worry with Rockstar character webs is that every cool contact usually means five minutes of unskippable driving dialogue before you even get to touch the objective. If Bautista's jobs give us actual freedom in entry points and vehicle escapes without instant fail states, the movement and setup could be incredible.
Assuming all these colorful characters actually stay in the single-player campaign. My practical brain worries Rockstar spends all this effort fleshing out Vice City lore just to nudge everyone toward an expensive online ecosystem six months later. If that rich criminal web gives us fifty hours of proper offline heists right out of the box, it might actually earn its launch price.
