When did Rockstar first confirm Grand Theft Auto 6 was in development?

Rockstar Games officially confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 was in development in February 2022, stating that the next entry in the series was "well underway." The brief statement offered no release window, platforms, or story information—just that work was progressing.

The confirmation ended years of speculation, but Rockstar didn't share any additional details at that time. For the full timeline of what happened next, including the 2023 trailer, delays, and the November 2026 launch, check our GTA 6 hub and GTA 6 news page.

What's still unconfirmed: Rockstar never clarified exactly when development started or how long it had been active before the February 2022 announcement. Everything else—like the Vice City setting, dual protagonists, and the final release date—came from later trailers and press releases.
